Toile de jouy

A fabric with a distinctive style

The history of the Toile de Jouy fabric has ancient roots.
This fascinating fabric takes its name from the town of Jouy-en-Josas, in the ÃŽle-de-France region, near Versailles. In 1756 this place not far from Paris was chosen by Christophe Philippe Oberkampf, an entrepreneur, for the headquarters of his printed fabric factory. The proximity to the Bièvre river, whose chemical qualities were functional for washing fabrics, made it the ideal place.

The Oberkampf Manufactory, among others, printed very high-quality cotton with monochromatic designs of traditional bucolic scenes: farmers harvesting hay, couples of lovers, animals, and vegetation... If initially the patterns were created on engraved wooden boards, they were later transferred to the fabric using copper cylinders and this increased the color fastness, contributing to the success of the manufacturing. In 1783 the company became a royal manufactory.

In France at that time the Toile de Jouy was fashionable among nobles and the upper class. Women of all classes, including Marie Antoinette and Josephine Bonaparte, ardently desired it.

The fabric with rural designs is still popular today, both for interior furnishings and for clothing, synonymous with elegance, research, and charm.
A fabric that has been able to intercept the spirit of the times, moving between rococo imprint and pastoral scenes, neoclassical moods, or famous representations of current events.

Our collection in Toile de Jouy fabric, printed in Italy, includes sheets, duvet covers, pajamas and scrunchies in three traditional colors, blue, burgundy and green.
